For years, the ultra fans of the three most important soccer clubs in Istanbul (Galatasaray, Fenerbahçe and Beşiktaş) have been known worldwide for their unconditional support of their teams. Their mutual rivalry often results in extremely violent confrontations with numerous injuries and even deaths. But something extraordinary happened in the summer of 2013: during the protests and clashes against the Turkish government and Prime Minister Erdogan in Gezi Park, the competing fan clubs united for the first time in a common cause. People who are notorious for their hate are now standing side by side and fighting the ruling system in Turkey under the name “Istanbul United.”
